How Long Is a Track? + Other Track Measurements

Whether you’re planning a new facility, resurfacing an existing track, or simply curious about the length of a track, understanding standard running track dimensions is essential for schools and athletic programs.

From lane widths to overall dimensions, these track and field measurements ensure consistency, safety, and fair competition. At Miller Sports, we help schools and athletic facilities design and build tracks that meet NFHS, NCAA, and World Athletics standards. Below is a simple breakdown of the most common measurements of a running track.

How Long Is a Standard Running Track?

A standard outdoor running track is 400 meters in length. This distance is measured along the inside edge of Lane 1, approximately 30 centimeters from the curb.

  • 400 meters = 1 lap around the track
  • 1,600 meters = 4 laps (approximately one mile)

This 400-meter design is used for high school, collegiate, and professional competition tracks across the U.S.

Standard Track Layout and Dimensions

Most outdoor tracks feature an oval shape made up of two straightaways and two symmetrical curves.

Key measurements:

  • Straightaways: 84.39 meters each
  • Curved sections: Radius of approximately 36.5 meters
  • Total lanes: 6–8 lanes (8 is most common for competition)

Track Lane Width and Markings

Each lane on a standard outdoor track measures:

  • 1.22 meters wide (including lane lines)

Lane markings are carefully measured to ensure accurate race distances. Because outer lanes are longer, staggered starting lines are used for races longer than 100 meters.

Total Width of a Running Track

The overall width of a track depends on the number of lanes:

  • 8-lane track: Approximately 9.76 meters wide
  • 6-lane track: Approximately 7.32 meters wide

Additional space is often required around the track for safety zones, fencing, drainage, and spectator areas.

What About High School Tracks?

Most high school track lengths in the U.S. follow the same 400-meter standard used at higher levels. However, older facilities may have:

  • Fewer lanes
  • Non-standard measurements
  • Asphalt or older rubberized surfaces

When resurfacing or upgrading, many schools take the opportunity to bring their track into full compliance with modern standards.

Other Common Track and Field Track Measurements

Here are a few additional measurements schools often ask about:

  • 100-meter dash: Run on the straightaway
  • 110-meter hurdles (boys) / 100-meter hurdles (girls): Straightaway events
  • 200 meters: Half lap
  • 800 meters: Two laps
  • 4×400 relay: One lap per athlete

Planning or Upgrading a School Track

Understanding how long a track is and the other track measurements we’ve laid out is just the first step. Proper design, drainage, base construction, and surfacing make a huge difference in performance and longevity.

At Miller Sports, we design and build running tracks for schools throughout the Mid-Atlantic and East Coast, including:

  • Pennsylvania
  • New Jersey
  • Maryland
  • Delaware
  • New York
  • Virginia

Our team ensures every project meets competition standards while fitting your school’s campus and budget.
